Best Day Trips Less Than Two Hours from Austin

One of my favorite things about living in Central Texas is how easy it is to escape for a little adventure without ever hopping on a plane. Whether you want a quiet day in nature, a fun small-town getaway, or great food and wine, there’s so much to explore just a short drive from Austin.

So, if you’re looking for a few ideas for your next weekend adventure, here are some of my favorite day trips that are all within about two hours of home.

Wimberley

If you love a mix of art, nature, and small-town charm, Wimberley is a must. It’s about an hour southwest of Austin, and the drive itself is beautiful.

You can stroll through the Wimberley Square to browse local shops, grab a coffee, or pick up handmade crafts. On warm days, head to Blue Hole Regional Park or Jacob’s Well for a refreshing swim. And if you enjoy a good view, stop by the Wimberley Valley Winery for a glass of Texas wine and some sunshine.

Fredericksburg

This Hill Country favorite is just under two hours away and perfect for a weekend drive. Known for its wineries, German heritage, and charming main street, Fredericksburg offers something for everyone.

Spend your day wine tasting, shopping, or exploring the National Museum of the Pacific War. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike Enchanted Rock for stunning views of the Hill Country.

Georgetown

Closer to home but full of personality, Georgetown is one of the easiest and most enjoyable day trips from North Austin. It has a beautiful town square, great restaurants, and plenty of small boutiques to explore.

You can also visit Blue Hole Park along the San Gabriel River or enjoy a scenic walk around Lake Georgetown. Grab lunch at 600 Degrees Pizzeria or brunch at Monument Cafe, both local favorites.

Marble Falls

About an hour northwest of Austin, Marble Falls is a laid-back town with a true Texas feel. Enjoy a day by the water at Lake Marble Falls, browse local shops, and don’t leave without stopping at Blue Bonnet Café for a slice of their famous pie.

For outdoor lovers, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge nearby offers great hiking and scenic views that feel worlds away from the city.

Dripping Springs

Known as the “Gateway to the Hill Country,” Dripping Springs is only about 45 minutes from Austin and full of local charm.

You’ll find beautiful wineries, breweries, and distilleries like Treaty Oak Distilling and Bell Springs Winery. It’s also home to scenic swimming spots like Hamilton Pool Preserve. Make sure to grab lunch at Rolling in Thyme and Dough—a cozy local favorite.

Johnson City

About an hour and a half west of Austin, Johnson City is small but full of Texas history and Hill Country views.

You can visit the LBJ National Historical Park, stop by Science Mill for a fun family-friendly experience, or enjoy local wine and art galleries. It’s also a great spot to explore the Texas Wine Trail without the bigger Fredericksburg crowds.

Salado

This hidden gem is about an hour north of Austin and is the perfect blend of charm and creativity. You’ll find antique stores, art galleries, and some of the best small-town shopping around.

Stroll along Main Street, grab lunch at The Stagecoach Inn, and visit Barrow Brewing Company for a cold drink and live music by the creek.

Living in Central Texas means adventure is always close by. Whether you want to explore the Hill Country, try local wine, or just enjoy a day in a new town, there’s something nearby for every mood and season.

And if you ever fall in love with one of these spots and start thinking, “I could see myself living here,” well, that’s where I come in. I’d love to help you explore what’s possible across North Austin and the surrounding Hill Country.
